Lure Coursing is a sport that tries to stimulate the sight hound's natural instinct for coursing. For hundreds of years sight hounds have been selectively bred for their ability to chase and catch live game (coursing). In the modern world they no longer have work to do but the urge is still strong. By giving our hounds a safe, humane outlet for their instincts we can make them happier and healthier....and have great fun ourselves!
The "Lure" (an old rag or piece of deerskin) is tied to a line that is pulled around pulleys by a motor especially designed for the purpose. The course pattern is irregular and similar to the way game might run in the open field. Hounds typically race in pairs. They are released at the start line by their owners and the lure operator keeps the lure just ahead of the nose of the lead dog.
It's a wonderful sight to see happy, healthy hounds fulfilling their breed instincts. Rippling muscles, graceful movement and sheer, single-minded determination to catch the lure - just as their ancestors did when chasing live game all those years ago.
Although traditionally a sport for Sight Hounds most dogs enjoy lure coursing. Scent Hounds and Terriers do particularly well. Sight Hounds, Scent Hounds and Terriers generally have no need to be trained or enticed to chase the lure since the desire to chase is instinctual. However all breeds seem to enjoy the sport and quickly figure out what to do.
